Pinlang regularly welcomes Lee Yu-Chen as a guest singer. Born and raised in Taiwan, Lee studied « Gezaixi », the Taiwanese opera, with well-known master Liao Chiung-Chih.
At the beginning of the XXth century, « Gezaixi » was played by street musicians, then it gradually found its way into theaters and is now an important part of Tawainese popular culture. « Gezaixi » songs often are melancholic and haunting, although they can also have a lighter touch. The musical accompaniment has evolved over time : along traditional instruments, you can now sometimes hear a saxophone, a synthesizer or a set of drums. Over the recent years, many young contemporary composers have written arrangements for« Gezaixi ».
It is with this open musical mind that Lee and Pinlang play « Gezaixi » together. The trio also pays tribute to legendary Formosan songwriter Teng Yu-hsien : his songs, written in the 1930s, remain in the heart of all Taiwanese people.
